鎌倉文華館 鶴岡ミュージアム
Overview
The Tsurugaoka Museum, Kamakura, is the cultural hub of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu.
This museum inside Tsurugaoka Hachimangu covers the culture and history of the shrine and Kamakura, from medieval art to festival traditions. The building itself is designated an Important Cultural Property, designed by Sakakura Junzo, a student of Le Corbusier, and opened in 1951 as the first public museum of modern art in Japan. After closing in 2016, it was renovated and reopened in 2019 as a shrine museum, preserving Sakakura's signature central courtyard and L-shaped second-floor galleries. The covered first-floor terrace faces the Heike Pond, and light reflecting off the water moves across the ceiling as you walk through.
