Tsuriishi-jinja Shrine in southern Iwate is built around a 14-meter boulder balanced on a cedar-covered hillside, considered the dwelling of a deity of knowledge. The stone appears certain to fall yet has held its position through centuries of tremors, including the massive 2011 earthquake, a fact that draws students hoping the stone's steadiness will carry over to their own exams. Because the Japanese word for 'fail' and 'fall' are the same, the site draws many students before entrance exam season. The shrine is decorated year-round with reeds from the nearby Kitakami River and sells school-related amulets and ema votive plaques.
Local tips
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
