Overview

Buddhist temple unlike any other in Tokyo, featuring eclectic Indo-Byzantine architecture near Tsukiji Market.

A Buddhist temple unlike any other in Japan, featuring a striking Indo-Saracenic design with stone elephants, stained glass windows, and a pipe organ that hosts regular concerts. Built in 1934 after the original temple burned, the fusion architecture reflects Buddhism's origins in India while serving as a working temple with meditation sessions and morning services open to visitors. The temple cafe serves memorable breakfast sets in a serene setting.

Local tips

The inner market moved to Toyosu but the outer market is still thriving. Come before 10 AM and start from the less crowded east side.
