“Onsen” is usually translated as “hot spring,” but natural springs are not always hot.
Tsukigatani Onsen in the mountain town of Kamikatsu uses natural spring water, but because the local geology produces no geothermal heat, the water must be warmed before bathing. The facility heats it using wood chip boilers fueled by waste timber from forest thinning, a practical use of the town's surplus wood supply. The baths are open for day visitors and overnight guests. The surrounding area includes a campsite, a glamping operation with indoor and outdoor programs for families, and access to the Katsuura River and the nearby forested hill called Irodori Yama, making this a reasonable base for a longer stay in the area.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
