Stunning gorge deep in an ancient cypress forest, a remedy to the hustle of nearby Nagoya and urban centers.
Tsukechi Gorge cuts through ancient hinoki cypress forest in the mountains of eastern Gifu, about 90 minutes by car from Nagoya. The main draws are Kanon Falls and Fudo Falls, connected by well-maintained trails that wind along a river so clear every stone on the bed is visible, the water running an extraordinary blue-green. Natural swimming holes form at the base of several cascades in summer. Autumn brings vivid foliage against the dark evergreen canopy. A riverside campground at the gorge entrance makes an overnight stay easy. The area is far less crowded than comparable gorges in the region.
