1160 founding; the oldest tea shop in Japan, on the south end of Uji Bridge, run by the same family for 24 generations.
Founded in 1160 by Furukawa-no-Tsuen, the oldest continuously operating tea shop in Japan. The current building is a 1672 Edo-period structure on the south end of Uji Bridge, with the same family running the shop for 24 generations. The shop sells Uji matcha and sencha; the small attached cafe serves matcha and tea-flavored sweets at low tatami tables overlooking the river. The 1672 main building's central pillar is the original Edo-period log.
Cafe seating is limited (12 seats); arrive before noon on weekends. The matcha set is 1,200 yen including a tea-leaf jelly; standalone matcha is 600 yen.
