Overview

Trohki Waterfall is highly unusual; there is only one other like it in all of Japan.

Trohki is one of only two waterfalls in Japan that empties directly into the sea rather than a river or lake. The name comes from todoroki, meaning thunder or roar, and when the tides are right the water spreads wide across the rocks with a deep, rumbling sound. Visitors cannot get close, but two observation points offer clear views of the falls with Mt. Mocchomu rising behind them. The first lookout, reached by a narrow forest path behind the Pon-tan kan building, is slightly closer. The second is inside Yakushima Botanical Research Park, which charges 500 yen entry.
