Overview

The Treasure Museum at Toyokuni Shrine holds objects associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, many donated by private owners in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The bronze-roofed building was designed by architect Takeda Goichi, a contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, and opened in 1925. Though its exterior references the Azuchi-Momoyama architectural style of Hideyoshi's era, the structure is built from reinforced concrete, which was cutting-edge construction at the time. It was among the first privately operated museums in Japan and is noted by architectural historians as an early example of reinforced concrete design used to evoke traditional forms.
