Overview
Japan's northernmost onsen with rare petroleum-infused springs prized for skin healing.
Japan's northernmost hot spring village pumps oil-infused water from 960 meters underground, one of only two petroleum-containing onsens in the world. Discovered during oil drilling in 1926, the sulfurous, amber-tinted water feels silky and has drawn long-stay visitors seeking relief from psoriasis and eczema for nearly a century. The Fureai Center offers day bathing in two types of water: the distinctive oily spring and a clearer sodium-chloride spring. Surrounding Sarobetsu Plain erupts with wildflowers from June through August.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
