Toyota Municipal Museum of Art: Takahashi Setsuro Gallery
豊田市美術館:高橋節郎記念館
Overview
Works by lacquer artist Takahashi Setsuro (1914–2007) are on display in this gallery that sits across the sculpture terrace from the main Toyota Municipal Museum of Art building.
The Takahashi Setsuro Gallery sits across the sculpture terrace from the main Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, designed by the same architect, Taniguchi Yoshio. Lacquer artist Takahashi Setsuro (1914-2007) donated most of the displayed works to Toyota city after a solo show in 1984. His signature technique involved coating surfaces in black urushi lacquer, carving patterns in, then filling the grooves with gold leaf or powdered gold to create modern abstract works inspired by ancient cave paintings and clay figures. The gallery is kept dark so the golden patterns glow against the black backgrounds. A lounge facing the garden and a workshop area complete the space.
