The Toyota Municipal Museum of Art is one of the city’s major attractions.
The Toyota Municipal Museum of Art opened in 1995 on the former site of Koromo Castle, in a building designed by Taniguchi Yoshio, who later led the MoMA renovation in New York. The design reveals itself gradually through winding paths and tree screens before opening into daylight-filled upper galleries. The permanent collection includes works by Klimt, Brancusi, Nara Yoshitomo, and Olafur Eliasson, alongside modern furniture by Le Corbusier and Donald Judd. A traditional teahouse designed by Taniguchi shows parallels between Japanese architecture and modernism. The sculpture terrace overlooks the city, with a reflection pool creating shifting images of the building and outdoor works.
