Toyamago Village
遠山郷
Overview
A hidden mountain enclave along the Tenryu River, famous for its ancient spirit-welcoming festival and untouched landscapes.
Deep in the mountains of southern Nagano, Toyamago is a cluster of remote hamlets along the Tenryu River, virtually unknown to international visitors. The area is famous for the Shimotsuki Matsuri, a December festival where 42 spirits are invoked through traditional masked dances around sacred fires, recognized as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The dramatic gorge scenery, abandoned mountain trails, and genuine rural hospitality make Toyamago feel like stepping into old Japan.
Local tips
If you can time your visit for early December, the Shimotsuki Matsuri at Shimoguri no Sato is one of Japan's most haunting and authentic folk festivals. No tourist infrastructure, just ancient ritual.
