The Towada/Oirase area in Aomori offers a stunning natural escape centered around the majestic Lake Towada and the picturesque Oirase Gorge. Visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of the 14-kilometer river valley, hike along its banks, or visit the serene Towada Shrine. This region provides a refreshing natural experience with opportunities for both active exploration and quiet contemplation amidst ancient cedars and flowing waters.
The Oirase Gorge follows the river for 14km through old-growth beech and maple forest between Yakeyama and Lake Towada, passing 14 named waterfalls. Walking the full gorge one way takes 3 to 4 hours. Local buses connect the trailheads for a one-way walk back to accommodation. The gorge is at peak color in late October. Lake Towada at the upper end is a caldera lake straddling Aomori and Akita prefectures, with a 2.5-hour boat circuit and the Hiroshi Nakamura bronze sculpture group on the south shore.
