Tottori Sand Dunes area

鳥取砂丘エリア
The Tottori Sand Dunes area stretches along the Sea of Japan coast, where wind-sculpted dunes up to 50 meters high meet the ocean. The Sand Museum rotates large-scale sand sculptures annually. Camel rides, paragliding, and sand-boarding offer active alternatives to walking the dunes themselves.
The dunes extend 16km along the San'in coast and reach 47 meters at the highest point. The area near the Sand Museum entrance draws the bulk of visitors. Walk 15 minutes west past the first ridge for empty terrain. Early morning is the best time to visit: the low-angle light catches the surface ripples before foot traffic accumulates. The Sand Museum changes its sculptural theme annually and is worth 30 minutes as a standalone visit.
