Tottori Karo Crab Aquarium
とっとり賀露かにっこ館
Overview
Japan's only crab-focused aquarium showcases local species and the fishing heritage that makes Tottori 'crab kingdom.'
Tottori faces the Sea of Japan, and the Matsuba snow crab caught in these waters is one of the most prized seasonal seafoods in the country. This aquarium in the city focuses specifically on the local crab species alongside broader Sea of Japan marine life. Touch pools let you handle live crabs and smaller sea creatures. The exhibits are designed accessibly, with enough informational depth for adults but a pace and format that works for children. It's an unusual concept for an aquarium, but the specificity of the crab focus gives it a coherence. The season runs from November to March when live Matsuba crabs are displayed. Outside crab season the aquarium continues year-round with other Sea of Japan species.
