Toshogu Shrine
shrine
東照宮
Spectacularly ornate shrine and mausoleum of the famous shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.
The lavishly decorated mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Unlike the minimalist aesthetic of many Japanese shrines, Toshogu explodes with vibrant colors and intricate wood carvings. It is surrounded by a magnificent cedar forest.
Look closely at the stable building to find the original 'See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil' monkey carving.
