UNESCO World Heritage Site
The main draw is the 8th-century Kondo's scent of ancient cypress; photography is forbidden, so allow 15 minutes to take in the interior. The adjacent Kodo Lecture Hall is often skipped but is also an original structure. For quiet, walk to Ganjin's mossy tomb at the back of the complex.
Local tips
Take time to walk to the back of the complex to see Ganjin's moss-covered tomb in the quiet woods.
