Toshichi Onsen Kyounso
onsen
藤七温泉 彩雲荘
Tohoku's highest-altitude onsen featuring primitive, bubbling mud baths.
Located at 1,400 meters on the slopes of Mt. Hachimantai, Toshichi Onsen is a rugged, high-altitude experience. It is famous for its simple, rustic mixed-gender outdoor pools where the sulfurous water bubbles up directly from the muddy ground beneath your feet. The floor of the baths is covered in therapeutic volcanic mud that bathers can apply to their skin. The facility is minimalist and focused entirely on the raw volcanic power of the mountain. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, often sitting above the clouds. Due to its extreme location, it is only open during the snow-free months. It is an 'at your own risk' style of traditional onsen that appeals to adventurers.
The mixed-gender baths are highly traditional; women are permitted to wear 'yu-ami' (bathing towels/dresses), which are sold at the front desk. Closed from late October to late May.
