Tosa-jinja
shrine
土佐神社
Shrine dedicated to Tosa Province's guardian deity, with cypress-bark roofing and sacred forests near Kochi.
Tosa-jinja sits in the northern part of Kochi city, among a stand of old trees that muffles city noise and gives the grounds a settled, unhurried atmosphere. The shrine is dedicated to Ajisukitakahikone-no-Mikoto and has connections to Tosa Province's earliest recorded history, making it one of the older established shrines in Shikoku. The main hall and worship buildings have been periodically restored, and the approach road is lined with stone lanterns. The shrine grounds are quiet on most days, with the occasional family visit or local worshipper. Cherry trees near the entrance bloom in spring.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
