Overview

Tower-shaped rock formations with a suspension bridge to a cave shrine in the cliff face.

Bizarre tower-shaped rock formations carved by the Osokawa River over millions of years. A suspension bridge crosses to a Buddhist shrine in a natural cave within the cliff face. The layered rock strata create dramatic mushroom-shaped formations.

Local tips

Volcanic rock columns formed by a million years of erosion by the Agano River, rising 200 meters along a 2km stretch of canyon. A suspension bridge at the base gives direct access to the cliff face. The Aizu-Wakamatsu-bound Aizu Railway stops at Tonohetsuri Station; the cliffs are a 1-minute walk from the platform. The Tadami Line, which runs along the river valley beyond this point, is one of Japan's most photographed train routes, especially in autumn.
