Tombs of Kikuchi Tamekuni and Shigetomo

In the cemetery of Gyokushoji Temple in Kikuchi, the tombs of father and son Kikuchi Tamekuni and Shigetomo mark a period when the clan shifted its energy from territorial politics to cultural patronage. Tamekuni, who became leader at 15 after the clan's battlefield glory had faded, channeled resources into education for both samurai and townspeople. He later retired to study Zen Buddhist texts and built the temple for his own burial. His son Shigetomo built a Confucian hall and attracted scholars from as far as Kyoto, making Kikuchi a regional center for Buddhist scholarship, Confucian philosophy, and tea culture in the late 15th century.
