菊池則隆の墓
Kikuchi Noritaka was the founder of the Kikuchi clan.
Kikuchi Noritaka arrived in what is now the Kikuchi district of Kumamoto around 1070, likely to oversee a court-owned agricultural estate. He adopted the local name, built a fortified compound on the river, and established what would become the Kikuchi clan, one of Kyushu's most enduring warrior families. Control over traffic on the Kikuchi River and the fertile plains around it allowed the clan to grow wealthy through trade and rice. Noritaka's compound remained clan headquarters until the late 1300s. The tomb that stands here today, constructed in 1818, is a commemorative monument rather than an actual burial site, marking the ground where the founder is believed to have been interred.
