Overview
A year-round LED art installation along Tokushima's riverside, the city that manufactures most of the world's blue LEDs.
Tokushima is home to Nichia Corporation, which invented the blue LED (Nobel Prize 2014). The city celebrates this heritage with permanent LED art installations along the Shinmachi River boardwalk. The blue-lit river walk, LED-decorated bridges, and seasonal light festivals create a uniquely high-tech atmosphere in this otherwise traditional city.
Local tips
Walk along the Shinmachi River after dark. The blue LED reflections in the water are beautiful. The December Hikari no Festival adds thousands more lights.
