Tokoji

An Obaku Zen Buddhist temple built in 1691 as the family temple of the Mori clan, feudal lords of the Choshu domain. The grounds contain over 500 stone lanterns lining paths to the graves of five Mori lords and their retainers, creating a hauntingly atmospheric scene. During the August Obon festival, all lanterns are lit in a spectacular ceremony honoring the dead. The Chinese-influenced architecture reflects the Obaku sect's origins in Ming Dynasty China.
