Tokachikawa
onsen
十勝川温泉
Riverside onsen ryokan district in Hokkaido's Tokachi region, known for plant-based moor hot springs unique in Japan.
Fed by moor hot springs derived from ancient plant humus buried beneath the Tokachi Plain, this onsen village pumps amber-colored water rich in natural moisturizing compounds that locals call the 'beauty bath.' Discovered in 1900 along the Tokachi River, the springs are so rare that fewer than a handful exist worldwide. The adjacent Garden Spa roadside station offers free foot baths overlooking the river where whooper swans gather from November through March. Obihiro city center is only 20 minutes away by bus, but the pastoral quiet feels far deeper.
