Overview
Togyu is Tokunoshima's centuries-old tradition of bull sumo, in which bulls trained specifically for combat are matched against each other rather than against humans. Around 400 bulls are currently in active training on the island, and three title tournaments each year determine the yokozuna champion across weight categories. The atmosphere at tournament time is electric, with drums, trumpets, and flag-waving from supporters. Owners invest years into training each animal, which often develop distinct personalities and are treated as part of the family.
