Most come for the autumn maples from Tsutenkyo Bridge. Arrive at 8:30am on a weekday in November to avoid the hour-long queues. The real revelation is often Mirei Shigemori's 1939 Hojo gardens, whose moss checkerboards photograph best under overcast skies. Outside November, the grounds are largely overlooked.
