Tanigami Nyonindo Hall Site

Unlike the other halls along Koyasan's Women's Pilgrimage Route, which each sat beside a gate connecting the sacred mountain to towns below, Tanigami Nyonindo stood where no road led up from the valley. Instead, it marked a branching shortcut down to the Koyasan plateau. The site also lies near the start of the trail up Mt. Benten, a peak Kobo Daishi reportedly enshrined to the goddess Benzaiten shortly after founding Koyasan. Like the other nyonindo halls, it served as a rest and lodging stop for pilgrims, travelers, and goods transporters along a route that was once women's primary access to Koyasan's religious world.
