The Sino-Japanese Peace Memorial House

This museum in Shimonoseki preserves the site where the Treaty of Shimonoseki was signed in April 1895, ending the First Sino-Japanese War. The building was constructed in 1937 on the grounds of the original Shunpanrō inn where negotiations took place, with the conference room recreated inside using original European-style chairs custom-made in Britain and arranged in the actual seating order of both delegations. A notable footnote: the Chinese chief negotiator Li Hongzhang was attacked by a Japanese radical mid-talks, and Japan never fully recovered the diplomatic ground lost by the incident.
