Overview
The Seiryū-gū Honden is the main sanctuary within the small complex dedicated to Seiryū Gongen, the protective deity of Daigo-ji, and of esoteric Shingon Buddhism in general.
The Seiryu-gu Honden, built in 1517 after a fire destroyed its predecessor, is the main sanctuary for Seiryu Gongen, a protective deity of Daigo-ji introduced to Japan from China by Kukai. The deity's name can mean either 'pure waterfall' or 'blue dragon,' reflecting her origins as the third daughter of the sea dragon king. Separated from its worship hall following Shinto tradition, the sanctuary sits at the heart of an annual spring festival from April 1 to 21, during which a procession in historical costumes marks the cherry blossom season at Daigo-ji.
