500-year festival with glowing lanterns floating down Tenno River, drawing crowds each year to Tsushima Shrine.
Tsushima Shrine in Aichi Prefecture is best known for its spectacular Tenno Matsuri, one of the most visually stunning festivals in Japan, held annually in late July. During the festival, ornately decorated makiwara-bune boats laden with hundreds of lanterns float down the Tenno River at night, their reflections shimmering on the dark water in a scene of extraordinary beauty. By day, the boats are transformed into towering structures topped with elaborate karakuri mechanical puppets that perform for riverside crowds. The shrine itself features an imposing gatehouse and ornate wooden pavilions set in wooded grounds, and has been a center of worship since the Kamakura period. Outside festival season, the peaceful precincts offer a contemplative walk through camphor and cedar groves.
