Overview
The history of indigo dyeing can be explored in the picturesque surroundings of the Little Indigo Museum in Kayabuki no Sato.
Set inside a thatched farmhouse built in 1796 in Miyama's Kayabuki no Sato village, this small museum showcases hundreds of indigo-dyed pieces from around the world collected by artist Shindo Hiroyuki. Shindo first studied indigo dyeing at Kyoto City University of Arts in the 1960s, then moved to Miyama in 1981 for its pure groundwater. His studio, where floor-level dye vats hold chemical-free indigo that later fertilizes his vegetable garden, is visible from the entrance. Admission is 300 yen, and the rotating exhibition fills the attic where dried thatching grass was once stored.
