Down a curving staircase of 129 steps lies the entrance to a large limestone cave guarded by a fearsome statue of the Buddhist deity Fudō Myō-ō.
Descend 129 steps to reach this limestone cave in Nara, guarded by a statue of Fudō Myō-ō, the Buddhist deity of fire and protection. For centuries, Shugendō ascetics trained here in complete darkness, navigating sudden drops and rocky overhangs toward the sound of Fudō no Taki waterfall deep inside. Today the 140-meter cave is lit with handrails, and the four chambers are accessible to all. Entry is through the Kissa Hora! Ana café, which also serves dishes made with wild boar and venison alongside baked goods.
