The Kanmon Building
関門ビル
Overview
At first glance, this unobtrusive structure looks like just another office building, but it once held the head offices of shipping company Kanmon-Kisen Co., Ltd.
Built in 1931, the Kanmon Building served as the head office of the Kanmon-Kisen shipping company and stands apart from the surrounding neoclassical buildings in Shimonoseki's historic waterfront district. Its dark gray reinforced concrete exterior plays with asymmetry in ways that brick construction could not allow: windows of different shapes and sizes, decorative projections that seem deliberately off-balance, and a bamboo-like faux column beside the entrance. A small porthole near the entrance hints at the building's maritime origins. Cryptic details still puzzle visitors, including bronze piping around the upper octagonal windows and a weathered ceramic animal face beside the main door.
