The Hot Springs of Shiobara
onsen
塩原の温泉
Each of the hot-spring areas contains a number of individual onsen, and even neighboring baths can have very different characteristics.
The Shiobara Valley holds ten distinct hot-spring areas along the Hoki River, each with different mineral compositions, temperatures, and water colors. Ooami Onsen sits the deepest in the valley, accessible by stairs 150 meters below the road. Shionoyu has the highest salt concentration in the area, with water ranging from clear to dark reddish brown. Motoyu, the oldest spring and located deep in forested mountain terrain, draws visitors looking for quiet soaking. Arayu, in the highland area near ski resorts, is the only one with acidic sulfur water that can run milky white. Many springs are open to day visitors.
