The Great Hirayu Waterfall

平湯大滝
The Great Hirayu waterfall is close to the Hirayu Onsen hot-spring village.
The Great Hirayu Waterfall stands 64 meters tall near the Hirayu Onsen village, created tens of thousands of years ago when volcanic lava cooled against older sedimentary rock and formed the two cliffs between which the falls now drop. In 1990 it was recognized as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. Local legend says the hot springs below were discovered by soldiers from the Warring States period who followed an old white monkey that appeared from behind the falls. The cascade changes face with each season, from spring green to autumn reds and a frozen curtain of ice in winter.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
