照国神社
Overview
Shrine in central Kagoshima dedicated to the Shimazu lords, featuring a massive torii and summer lantern festival.
Established in 1863 to enshrine Shimazu Nariakira, the progressive lord of Satsuma domain who championed industrialization and influenced many of the reforms that shaped the Meiji Restoration. The shrine sits near central Kagoshima, surrounded by large camphor trees, and the grounds include a small museum dedicated to Nariakira's legacy. One camphor tree on the grounds has been carefully pruned over generations into the silhouette of a bird in flight, a distinctive feature pointed out by every guide who visits. The shrine is a pleasant 20-minute stop on a walk between Kagoshima's central sights.
Local tips
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
