Teradaya Incident

The Teradaya Inn in Fushimi is where, in March 1866, a young maid named Oryō leapt from her bath and ran upstairs without fully dressing to warn radical samurai Sakamoto Ryoma that shogunate officers were raiding the inn. Ryoma fired his Smith and Wesson, escaped wounded, and later married Oryō. Their recovery trip to Kirishima hot springs is considered Japan's first honeymoon. The inn burned in the 1868 Battle of Toba-Fushimi but was rebuilt and still operates today, with Ryoma's room, Oryō's bath, and the fateful staircase faithfully replicated.
