Tenryukyo Gorge
天龍峡
Overview
Scenic gorge along Southern Alps base with Tenryu River boat tours passing through dramatic canyon scenery.
Carved by the Tenryu River along the base of the Southern Alps, Tenryukyo is a dramatic gorge of towering granite cliffs and emerald pools. The classic way to experience it is by jet boat ride through the rapids, with boatmen narrating the scenery along the way, autumn foliage season turns the canyon walls into a tapestry of red and gold. Hot springs dot the area, so you can soak after your ride. The gorge is free to visit on foot, but the boat tour is the real draw.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
