天川の水
The natural spring known as Tengawa no Mizu, or “water of the heavenly river,” pours from the side of a hill just west of Hobomi Bay on the grounds of Seisuiji Temple.
The Tengawa no Mizu spring, meaning 'water of the heavenly river,' flows from a hillside on the grounds of Seisuiji Temple on Oki Island. According to temple records, the itinerant priest Gyoki discovered it in the eighth century and founded the temple here in its honor, naming it the 'temple of pure water.' The spring has reportedly never run dry in recorded history, and its waters are believed to heal illness. It produces around 400,000 liters of water per day, clean enough to drink directly from the source. The local Oki Sake Brewing Company uses this water in its sake. In 1985, the Ministry of the Environment listed it among Japan's 100 Famous Waters.
