Overview

This 2.5-ton bronze bell, designated a National Treasure, once hung in the Bell Tower across the pond from the Phoenix Hall.

Cast during the Heian period, this 2.5-ton bronze bell is one of the three finest temple bells in Japan by traditional reckoning, alongside those at Onjoji in Otsu and Todaiji in Nara. The bell at Onjoji is considered sweetest in tone, Todaiji's clearest in resonance, and this one at Byodoin the most beautiful in appearance. The surface is covered almost entirely with intricate carvings: dragons near the top, celestial figures in the middle, and mythical lions at the base. Most temple bells leave broad empty areas, making this dense decoration unusual. The original now rests inside for conservation, and a replica hangs in the Bell Tower beside the Phoenix Hall.
