Overview

Experience authentic tea ceremony in Kanazawa's geisha districts, where matcha is whisked in century-old teahouses.

Teicha, or formal whisked tea service, is offered at several teahouses in Kanazawa's historic Higashi Chaya geisha district, where the practice fits naturally into the preserved streetscape of ochaya tea houses. A seated service typically includes a bowl of thick matcha prepared with a bamboo whisk by a host following the precise movements of the tea ceremony, paired with a seasonal wagashi sweet. The bowl is turned before drinking, the sweets are eaten first, and the whole sequence moves at a pace that is deliberately unhurried. Several teahouses in the Kenroku-en garden area also offer abbreviated versions for visitors with limited time. It's a practical way to sit quietly for thirty minutes while absorbing something of the city's cultural depth.
