Overview

Tatsunogozen Shrine is the main Shinto sanctuary in Yunotsu and enshrines deities related to the town’s two main sources of prosperity: the sea and the hot springs.

The original object of worship at this clifftop shrine was a rock jutting from the hillside that early worshippers believed resembled a roaring dragon, and you can still see it protruding above the small main sanctuary. Officially founded in 1532, the shrine honors deities connected to both the sea and the area's hot springs, the two sources of life for the town of Yunotsu. The unusually large worship hall was built to host Iwami Kagura performances, a popular regional folk dance tradition that honors Shinto deities. Every Saturday evening, ceremonial kagura dances are performed here and visitors can view the ema plaques featuring boats and maritime scenes.

Local tips

Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
