Overview
Tate Jinja Shrine stands on the site of what was once Dobutsu Fort, built here over 500 years ago.
Tate Jinja Shrine in Aomori stands on the site of Dobutsu Fort, a castle built over 500 years ago and destroyed in the 1591 Kunohe Rebellion. The entrance torii marks the fort's original gate, and the remnants of a moat are still visible at the edges of the grounds. The current shrine building, reconstructed in 1981, is dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto deity of war. The path leading up to it is lined with tall Japanese cedars, and one enormous Japanese fir on the grounds is among the largest in Aomori Prefecture. The shrine is a designated waypoint on the Michinoku Coastal Trail.
Local tips
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
