Mountain temple guarded by hundreds of ceramic Tanuki.

Tucked into the eastern hills of Kyoto, this temple requires a climb up 250 steps, passing hundreds of raccoon-dog (tanuki) statues representing prosperity. It is famous for its wooden 'butai' stage, similar to Kiyomizu-dera but completely free of crowds. It is a major site for traffic safety blessings and mountain asceticism rituals (yamabushi).

Local tips

Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
