谷瀬の吊り橋
Hand-built 297-meter swaying bridge 54 meters above Totsukawa River, limited to 20 crossers at once.
The Tanize Suspension Bridge spans 297 meters across the Totsukawa River, standing 54 meters above the water. Built in 1954 after the community pooled resources with government funds, it replaced wooden bridges that regularly washed out in one of Japan's highest-rainfall regions. The bridge was reinforced in 1972 against wind and earthquakes. Across the bridge, the village of Tanize has a walking trail map leading to a shrine, a small cafe, a viewpoint overlooking the bridge, and local lodging. Residents say the observation deck was built at the spot where people once signaled across the river by hand in the years before the bridge existed. Cross at your own pace and avoid intentional swaying.
