The Tanigawa Mountain Range’s harsh climate and precipitous landscape support many rare plant and animal species, including those that would normally be found only at alpine elevations.
The Tanigawa Mountain Range sits within Joshin'etsukogen National Park and is accessible via ropeway from the base station near Doai. The Tanigawadake Information Center, opened in 2021, provides current weather and trail conditions and introduces the flora and fauna of the area. The most accessible route to the summit uses the ropeway to Tenjindaira and follows the Tenjin Ridge, taking about three hours up and two hours down. A more demanding full circuit via the Nishiguro Ridge takes around seven hours. For a shorter outing, Tenjindaira has walking trails and a restaurant. The Tanigawadake Mountain Museum nearby displays historical climbing equipment and photographs of local wildlife.
