Tanegashima Space Center
nature
種子島
Space Center located in the southeast corner of this island about 40 km south of Kyushu.
Tanegashima holds two significant entries in Japanese history: firearms arrived here in 1543, changing Japanese warfare permanently, and today it hosts Japan's primary rocket launch facility. Watching a launch from the island's beaches is a genuinely rare experience in Japan, and the space center museum is open year-round with interactive exhibits. Beyond the technology, the island has excellent surf breaks at its southern end, subtropical forests, ancient tombs, and sugar cane fields stretching under palm trees. The island is accessible by high-speed ferry or short flight from Kagoshima, and the warm climate makes it worth visiting in any season.
