Tanashiro Marshland
nature
田代湿原
A hidden alpine marshland in the Shirakami beech forest carpeted with seasonal wildflowers and surrounded by ancient trees.
Tanashiro Marshland sits along the trail to Mount Komagatake within the Shirakami Sanchi World Heritage area. The marsh is a botanical wonderland, cotton grass, skunk cabbage, and marsh marigolds bloom in succession from June through August. The surrounding beech forest is genuinely primeval, and the boardwalk trail through the marsh offers one of the most pristine natural experiences in northern Honshu. Even in peak season, you may have the trail to yourself.
Visit in late June for the marsh marigold bloom. The trail from Aqua Green Village to Tanashiro is about 2 hours each way and passes through the finest beech forest in the World Heritage core zone.
