Takkoku no Iwaya Bishamondo
temple
達谷窟毘沙門堂
1,200-year-old cliffside temple carved into rock, modeled after Kyoto's Kiyomizudera.
A 1,200-year-old cliffside temple built into a sheer rock face, modeled after Kyoto's Kiyomizudera but with a fraction of the visitors. The vermilion hall dedicated to Bishamonten juts out over rice paddies against a backdrop of weathered stone carvings. A massive rock-carved Buddha face peers from the cliff nearby, partially eroded by centuries of wind and rain.
